Balloons Employed to Smuggle Tobacco Products Shut Down Airport in Lithuania
Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for hours when multiple of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations impacting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that such operations become unprofitable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
